I shot this Story for Sotheby’s Catalog. A bit of backstory. The world’s largest rough diamond—weighing a jaw-dropping 1,109 carats—failed to sell at Sotheby’s London today, reaching a top bid of $61 million but falling short of the reserve. Named Lesedi La Rona, which translates to “our light” in the Tswana language, the tennis-ball-sized gem was unearthed from the Lucara Diamond Corporation’s Karowe mine in Botswana last November.
